Beyond The Static
The Story Behind Beyond The Static
If 222 was the signal cast into the unknown, Beyond the Static is what begins to answer.
When shaping the track, I wanted it to feel connected to the one before it. Not like a separate piece, but like the next movement of the same transmission. So I returned to the same key: A minor, and even the same chord progression that carried 222. But instead of the sparse, searching rhythm of the first track, the chords unfold through gentle arpeggios, like waves expanding outward.
Fragments of the original signal remain.
A delayed synth note drifts slowly across the stereo field.
A thin layer of radio static hums quietly beneath the music.
A distant high-frequency pad stretches across the background like a faint horizon of light.
These elements were carried over intentionally. Echoes of the same broadcast, still traveling through space, like the missing continuation of 222. The second half of a sentence that had been left unfinished. If the melody of 222 is the call, then the melody of Beyond the Static became the response.
When played together on piano alone, the two pieces almost sound like a single composition. As if one voice asks the question, and the other answers.
To deepen that sense of something just beyond perception, I added low vocal pads, a deep, male choral tone that drifts beneath the music like a distant chant. It isn’t meant to sound like words. More like a presence. A reminder that beyond the interference of noise and uncertainty, there may be something listening on the other side.
The arpeggiated synth carries a slightly nostalgic tone, like fragments of memory surfacing through the static. Over it, the piano moves slowly and deliberately, as if a quiet voice reaching outward, searching for meaning in the silence.
Near the end of the track, everything swells before collapsing suddenly into stillness. From that silence, the piano continues alone, accompanied only by the faint whisper of radio noise.
The full melody finally reveals itself.
In that moment, the transmission feels complete.
The call has been heard.
The connection made.
What once sounded like noise begins to resolve into something familiar. Something that was never truly lost, only waiting to be remembered.
Beyond the Static is that moment of recognition.
The moment when the quiet voice returns. Not from somewhere far away, but from within.
